About SMC and BMC

Composite materials are no longer exotic and become actively part of our life, they replace steel, aluminum and other traditional materials. The most important barrier on the way of this process is that the main fiberglass plastic items production methods which are used today are labour-intensive and scale badly.

For large-volume production requirements SMC (“prepregs”) and BMC (“premixes”) are intended. They allow getting items from composite materials (glassfiber plastic) in medium and large series using traditional methods for plastic refinement.

BMC and SMC look as formless fiber consisting of unsaturated polyester (binder), chopped glass fibre (which upgrades physical and mechanical properties), mineral additives (which upgrade quality of surface of the items and dielectric properties) and technological additives which are reducing shrinkage, relieving refinement and giving defined performmance characteristics


How do the SMC and BMC refined?

SMC and BMC compounds Formix are thermosetting plastics, forming of the items from these materials is done in steel press molds.

Compound spreads under pressure in the press mold, takes the most difficult forms, and as a result of heating chemical reaction takes place, which forms three dimensional polymer structures.

Press mold does not require treating with release agents. Release time in press mold is figured out for each item depending on wall thickness and geometry. Approximately it makes 12-20 seconds for 1 mm of thickness.

Formix compounds are refined by direct extrusion (in hydraulic press) and also under pressure (by the instrumentality of thermosetting plastic machines).

Refinement molding pressure makes up 50-100 Bar, temperature is 140-160 °С.


Which characteristics differentiate SMC and BMC from other materials?

Today there are practically no equivalents to SMC and BMC compounds in comparison with price and characteristics. They possess of strong thermal (more than 220 °C), chemical and corrosion resistance. Among their benefits are great density-weight ratio, low shrinkage (up to zero), and the highest quality of produced surface, facility of integral constructions and low cost in comparison with other high-performance materials. Items from these materials can go through processing by high temperature postprocessing (brazing, coloration). In the row of production spheres SMC and BMC compounds which have no analogs in their characteristics become really irreplaceable materials.
